but really, why haven't you watched it yet?
minor spoilers for the entire film.
Overall, i'd say this is one of the best films i've seen this year (and probably one of the best films of last year).
The cast is absolutely superb, the direction is just fantastic as Tom Ford taps into all your senses to make
you feel the emotion you're supposed to feel that George experiences. It's a quietly moving and simultaneously
devastating film that will definitely stir something inside of you.
Now on to my 8 reasons that are semi-superficial!
8. The gorgeous, gorgeous close-ups
Directors look out! THIS is how you do close-ups. The scene with the office girl talking with George was phenomenal because when she smiles, her entire smile turns a luminous red. You can't see it here because I've colored the caps a little too much but yeah.

7. The use of color in the film,
just look at this friggin example:
This is probably one of my favorite scenes JUST because of the use of color and saturation/desaturation in the film. Notice how in the 7th cap, George's face is a slightly duller shade and then it floods into color? Genius! Also, um, I really want the little girl's entire outfit, that shade of blue is sick and so are her matching shoes and dress. It's like she fell out of Alice in Wonderland or something. I WANT THAT OUTFIT NOW.

6. Nick Hoult's beauty: or let's all not watch the film and just sit here and gasp at Nick Hoult's beauty.
in the epic Matthew Goode and Nick Hoult interview from the January issue of Wonderland, Matthew constantly teases Nick about how the reviewers and film critics and himself were too caught up in 'gasping at Nick's beauty' to notice anything else and um, while I was re-watching this film when the dload came out, all I did was screencap Nick all the time so he has a very valid point. His beauty also the reason why I decided to do this picspam in the first place.

UNF UNF UNF UNF. SO DISTRACTING.
5. THE PRETTY AKA
TOM FORD IS A FUCKING GENIUS.
Oh dear lord, that scene at the gas station. I wonder how they even managed to get the colors in the sky that way!
I tried arranging the caps chosen here in a certain way. Certain rows are random but otherwise there's a bit of a pattern.
Spot them and maybe get a cookie?
Anyway, the direction in this film? SICK. Tom Ford should direct like every single film because even if it sucks, it'll be super duper gorgeous.

4. George and Jim's relationship
George and Jim's relationship is the soul of this film. I mean, the whole reason for the film and the motivation behind George's actions are because of the devastating and overwhelming sense of loss he feels from losing Jim. Their relationship is really beautiful, heartfelt, touching and most importantly, real. Also I was really distracted in their first kissing scene. Matthew Goode describes Colin Firth's way of kissing as 'a nymphomaniac on death row' and it looks like they're having a great time...
Also how cute is it that Jim is reading Breakfast At Tiffany's?

3. George and Kenny's relationship
Kenny is featured more prominently in the film than Jim so it's easier to feel more attached to his character than Jim's. George and Jim are the soul of the film but Kenny and George are the heart. Kenny is the one that comes along and makes George's otherwise gray day seem a little bit brighter. And possibly change his life.
So Kenny is a bit stalkerish in the film but uh, who wouldn't want to be stalked by Nick Hoult?

Awwwwwww. Notice how the color shifts when George sees Kenny walk into the bar?
2. Colin Firth's Academy Award deserving performance
Colin Firth SLAYED this. I mean, what in the fuck. I personally feel like Colin should have taken this this year. He was just terribly, terribly nuanced and quietly powerful and moving as George. The first twenty minutes or so had me in tears because his grief just rang so loudly even though it was just all in his face and mannerisms. GAWD. The second cap is one of my favorites because his expression is so hopeless and so blank and it's just devastating.

1. This GQ Motherfucking cast.
Because when I first found out about this film while stalking Matthew Goode early last year I was like, 'what in the actual fuck, how can there be an actual film with Nick Hoult, Matthew Goode, Colin Firth, Lee Pace, Julianne Moore and directed by Tom Ford? How is this real life?'

do COMMENT if you enjoyed this, it makes me happy and encourages me!
also, i screencapped every single cap here and colored every single thing here by myself so i will cut you if you steal and post this on tumblr/anywhere else.

It's a great period piece as well, besides being a fantastic emotional drama. Thank you so much!

I think I could actually cry over the fact that Nicholas and Colin were in the same movie (with homosexual relationships!) and it is just gorgeous. WOW.

Colin did a great job. It's so great to see him doing something other than bumbling.

I loved this movie. It was so unbelievably gorgeous and so unbelievably sad. Compellingly fantastic. I completely agree on Colin Firth's performance. With all the rom-coms he does it is easy to forget just how good he is. With a lesser actor those first 20 minutes would have just been boring and not epically heartbreaking.
Great job!
